0.2 improves everything !

A new version of Wieldo is out, and it improves all the things !!

Intro

Apparently it has already been 42 days since 0.1 was released which means Wieldo has had six whole weeks to grow up into 0.2 and is now 12 weeks old! As I hinted in the last devblog when talking about the roadmap, a lot of technical things have happened during the last six weeks and although it hasn't always brought new gameplay, it is very exciting for the game that these things have happened.

Let me guide you through those changes.

Bye bye toolbar

One very noticeable change from 0.1 to 0.2 is that the main toolbar is gone. The previous inventory was working but also invisible and unmanageable. Instead of having a half finished inventory/item system, you can now destroy and build blocks without limit. This will change when a proper inventory system is added to the game.

Hello build mode

Building with the new build mode

Placing and destroying blocks has become way simpler with the introduction of the build mode!

This mode allows you to build around you without having to place your character in awkward positions in an effort to aim at the right block.

Also there are now some cool particles when placing or destroying blocks! ✨

New blocks

All the blocks

The game now features 11 blocks instead of 3, with brand new textures! And that's not all. Some of these blocks can be cycled through to place the exact variation you might want to build, like the grass block or the slabs.

All the configurations

The list goes as follows:

  • Ice block
  • Leaves block
  • Trunk
  • Flower
  • Grass (neutral, 1 patch, 2 patches, 2 flowers, 3 flowers)
  • Planks block
  • Planks stairs (4 directions)
  • Planks slabs (6 sides)
  • Stone block
  • Stone stairs (4 directions)
  • Stone slabs (6 directions)

Debug screen

Debug screen

A new debug screen can now show how well the game is running. This screen can be displayed by pressing F6. The frame rate can be uncapped by pressing F3 + V (for Vsync).

Others

  • You can now toggle fullscreen by pressing F11.
  • Controller aware hints have appeared in the lower right corner of the screen, so I don't have to give you the controls in the devblog.
  • A message now constantly reminds us that there is no save system yet.
  • The rendering of sprites has been redone entirely and a lot of 1 pixel errors have disappeared from 0.1.
  • The outline has been upgraded to be able to connect all kinds of surfaces. This is not 100% reliable yet but has been the source of some fun dark shader magic internally.
  • There is a slight lighting gradient depending on how far blocks are from the character.

--------------

That's it for 0.2! Thanks for tuning in, it's time for me to work on 0.3 already 👨‍🏭
